Independent Educational Evaluation
In addition to providing independent evaluations, Dr. Bylund works directly with students and their families to bring about the necessary changes to achieve greater academic success. As a Bay Area educational psychologist, Dr. Bylund and his associates provide both direct and indirect interventions specifically designed to meet the unique needs of each child and adolescent.
As an experienced educational psychologist in the East Bay Area, Dr. Bylund views all clients, no matter what degree of challenge they may face, as inherently valuable and capable of change. This is more than a philosophy; Dr. Bylund's worldview is rooted in science. Neuroplasticity is a term that refers to the brain's ability to change (create new neurons and connections) in response to experience. No matter one's age or level of functioning, they are capable of growth and improvement through focused attention and persistence practice.
Dr. Bylund provides consultation to families and schools regarding the needs of struggling learners. He and his associates will review assessment reports and IEPs, consult with your child’s school and other providers, and attend SST, IEP, and 504 meetings.
Bylund Neuro-Educational Services now offers evidence based treatments for children and youth with dyslexia. The process begins with a comprehensive dyslexia evaluation to determine the presence or absence of dyslexia, including identification of specific dyslexia subtypes (i.e., dysphonetic, surface, and mixed dyslexia). When appropriate, this evaluation results in a clinical diagnosis and a treatment plan, including evidence based intervention, based on the individuals unique needs. Our knowledgeable and skilled dyslexia tutors then offer a range of proven, evidence based interventions to address the specific needs of your child to close the achievement gap that currently exists between them and their peers.
Executive Function Training:
At Bylund Neuro-Educational Services, we address the needs of adolescents with executive functioning deficits (e.g., ADHD, High Functioning Autism, Traumatic Brain Injury) using the SMARTS curriculum, and evidence based intervention that teaches critical thinking and learning skills including goal setting, thinking flexibility, organizing, prioritizing, working memory, and self monitoring.
Bylund Neuro-Educational Services is proud to offer Cogmed Working Memory Training® as a vehicle for improving neurocognitive functioning and subsequent academic and/or professional performance. Cogmed® is a viable option for everyone from those with neurocognitive impairments to typically developing individuals looking to achieve even higher levels of functioning.
Working memory is the ability to keep information “online” and manipulate it (e.g. categorize, sequence, summarize, draw conclusions) in order to solve problems. In other words, it is the neurocognitive system that provides temporary storage of information in the course of complex mental activities. As a facilitator of other neurocognitive processes, working memory can either enhance (when intact) or inhibit (when impaired) other thinking and learning skills. Poor working memory has been shown through research to impair one’s ability to concentrate and perform in school and at work. However, recent research breakthroughs have proven that Cogmed® strengthens neurocognitive functioning, specifically working memory, and improves academic and professional performance.
Cogmed® is an evidenced based cognitive training program with solid research supporting its use for improving working memory and related skills such as attention and executive function. It is not an “alternative” treatment for ADHD or any other specific medical diagnosis or disorder. Rather, Cogmed® is designed for anyone constrained by impaired working memory or anyone who simply wants to break through the bottleneck created by their working memory capacity.
Cogmed® training will improve working memory substantially and lastingly. For students academically constrained by working memory capacity this will allow them to take in the standard skills training and curriculum programs more effectively. This is expected to result in better math and reading comprehension performance. Put differently, Cogmed® acts as a “primer” for improved learning; allowing the student to build the necessary and fundamental platform needed for learning and school performance.
Cogmed® is an intensive and rigorous program available for pre-school age children, elementary students, adolescents, and adults. A typical program includes 25 training sessions occurring 5 days a week over a 5 week period. The program begins with an intake interview, includes weekly coaching calls, post-training follow-up, a report documenting the clients performance gains, and another 6 month follow-up to discuss benefits that continue to emerge over time. In addition to the initial 25 training sessions, during which Dr. Bylund monitors performance and provides weekly coaching calls, clients are provided an additional 12 months of training access, without coaching, at no additional cost.
While training is difficult at times and requires a high level of commitment to improving working memory capacity, the results are rewarding and satisfying. Cogmed® is a complete training program, straightforward to implement, and supported by a certified coach who monitors your performance and checks in with you on a weekly basis to discuss progress and strategies for maximizing outcomes. Current independent research shows that intensive training of working memory using Cogmed® generalizes to behavior and that Cogmed® has an 80% success rate for clients. In other words, 8 out of 10 people who use Cogmed® experience improved working memory capacity and real world functioning. As such, Cogmed® offers an effective, safe, non-pharmacological, and cost effective approach to address working memory and attention problems.
Based on more than 30 years of research, the Fast ForWord® program accelerates learning for students across a wide spectrum of ages and abilities — including those working at, above or below grade level — by applying proven research on how the brain learns. By building cognitive skills in the areas of memory, attention, processing, and sequencing, learners can realize achievement gains of up to two years in as little as three months and maintain an accelerated rate of learning even after the program ends.

ADHD coaching is a variation of cognitive behavioral therapy that specifically targets the core symptoms of the disorder such as poor planning, time management, goal setting, organization, and problems solving. Dr. Bylund and his associates provide ADHD coaching to adolescents and young adult student who are struggling to overcome the challenges presented by their ADHD. This is typically completed through weekly or bimonthly sessions during which the young person works with Dr. Bylund to understand the etiology of their ADHD, learn about executive functioning, set short and long-term goals, brainstorm solutions, build motivation, identify barriers created by their ADHD, develop specific strategies, practice skills, and monitor progress. For young children, ADHD Coaching occurs primarily with parents to help them better understand their child’s ADHD, cope with challenging behaviors, and develop and implement behavior modification strategies. Dr. Bylund and his associates will also work with parents to cultivate mindfulness in their daily routines in order to bring about greater well-being, patience, perseverance, resilience, responsiveness, and ability to notice and attend to moments of joy and success among daily challenges.
Mindfulness Based Interventions:
Mindfulness has been demonstrated through research to improve focus and behavioral regulation as well as reduce feelings of anxiety (i.e. Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction) and depression (i.e. Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy). Dr. Bylund works with children and youth to develop greater mindfulness in order to be more resilient in facing life’s challenges. He also works with parents of children with disabilities to develop greater mindfulness in order to better cope with the stress and challenge of raising a child with special needs.
Sports Concussion Baseline Testing:
An estimated 4 to 5 million concussions occur in the United States annually with an increasing trend amongst young athletes. Baseline testing is a pre-season neurocognitive exam used to assess an athlete’s brain function (e.g. attention, executive function, memory, information processing speed). Results from baseline tests can then be used to compare to similar exams following a suspected concussion and used by a medical provider to identify differences in neurocognitive functioning post injury.
Cost of Intervention Services:
Dr. Bylund's mission is to provide informative assessments and effective intervention for students with Bay Area ADHD challenges or other learning obstacles, helping them find success in their education. Dr. Bylund also strives to provide these services at an affordable cost to families. In addition to offering an extremely competitive rate, Dr. Bylund offers flexible payment plans and accepts Visa, Mastercard, American Express, and Discover. In addition, clients with Flexible Medical Spending Plans should investigate reimbursement as they may be able to recover the cost of assessment and/or intervention services.
